What Are Stub Ends Fittings?
Stub ends fittings are short, butt weld pipe fittings with a flared collar, called a lap, at one end. The plain end is bevelled and welded to the pipe, and the lap forms a flat sealing face against the mating flange. A loose lap joint flange, also called a backing flange, slides over the stub end and bolts to the opposite flange, which presses the two laps together.
The lap carries the gasket seal, and the backing flange carries the bolt load. Because the flange is not welded to the pipe, it can rotate freely, so the bolt holes can be lined up easily during assembly. Stub ends are manufactured to standards such as ASME B16.9 for long pattern, MSS SP-43 for short pattern and light-wall stainless steel, with lap joint flanges to ASME B16.5.
