What Are Reducing Tee Fittings?

Reducing tee fittings are T-shaped pipe fittings whose branch is smaller than the run. The two run openings share one size, while the third opening, called the outlet, rises at 90° and carries a smaller size. A tee marked 8″ × 6″ has an 8″ run and a 6″ outlet.

A reducing tee takes a large line and splits off a smaller branch in a single fitting. Fitters weld it between pipes, and the outlet then connects to the smaller pipe without a separate reducer. ASME B16.9 sets the dimensions of butt weld reducing tees. The tee takes the same schedule as the pipe it joins, so it carries the same pressure rating as that pipe.

Reducing Tee Fittings Types We Supply

As a reducing tee fittings manufacturer, we offer different constructions and material options for piping systems that need a smaller branch connection from a larger main line. The right type depends on pipe dimensions, manufacturing requirements, operating conditions, and the material specified for the project.

  • Seamless Reducing Tee: Manufactured from seamless pipe for applications where seamless construction is required, including specified high-pressure and high-temperature services.
  • Welded Reducing Tee: Produced using welded construction for suitable sizes and specifications, with radiographic testing available when required by the project.
  • Hot-Formed Reducing Tee: Shaped using heat and pressure to create the reduced branch, making it suitable for selected larger sizes and heavier wall thicknesses.
  • Cold-Formed Reducing Tee: Formed without heating the material, offering controlled dimensions and a smooth finish where the material and wall thickness permit.
  • Stainless Steel Reducing Tee: Available in ASTM A403 grades and construction types, including WP-S, WP-W, and WP-WX, according to the required specification.
  • Alloy Steel Reducing Tee: Grades such as WP11, WP22, and WP91 are used in selected high-temperature applications, including boilers and power plants.
  • Low-Temperature Reducing Tee: ASTM A420 WPL6 is suitable for piping systems designed for low-temperature service, including certain LNG applications.
  • Duplex and Super Duplex Reducing Tee: Selected for offshore, marine, and seawater systems that require strength and resistance to corrosion.
  • Barred Reducing Tee: Features bars across the branch opening to help pipeline inspection pigs continue along the main run rather than entering the branch.

Available sizes, material grades, and manufacturing methods depend on the applicable standards and project specifications. Custom run and branch dimensions can be supplied according to approved drawings.

Why Choose Reducing Tee Fittings?

A reducing tee combines a branch connection and a size reduction in one fitting. It connects a smaller branch pipe to a larger main line, eliminating the need to install a separate equal tee and reducer. This can reduce the number of welds, simplify installation, save space, and lower the number of potential leak points in a piping system.

Reducing tees are useful in industrial piping layouts where a large main pipeline supplies smaller connections to pumps, heat exchangers, valves, and process equipment. By matching the branch diameter to the required flow, engineers can avoid unnecessary pipe size and reduce material use in the branch section.

The fitting’s branch design also matters for strength and reliability. A properly manufactured reducing tee must meet the specified wall thickness, dimensions, and pressure requirements around the branch junction. The choice between a reducing tee and an alternative branch connection depends on the run diameter, outlet size, operating pressure, flow conditions, and applicable piping standards.
